About ScriptDB
A database of 117 writing systems from every corner of human civilization, spanning 5,000 years of recorded history.
Each entry lists the type of script (alphabet, abjad, abugida, syllabary, logographic and more), the region where it originated, the approximate date of its earliest known use, and a short history covering how it developed, which languages use it and what makes it distinctive.
The collection currently covers 10 script types and 5 historical eras. Browse from the home page by type, era or region, or use the search box to find a script by name, place or keyword. Dates for ancient scripts are approximate and reflect the earliest surviving evidence.
