Written right to left. 22 consonant letters with no distinct vowel letters in everyday use. Vowel points called niqqud were added by Masoretes in the Middle Ages. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain some of the oldest Hebrew manuscripts. Each letter has a numerical value used in gematria. Hebrew was revived as a spoken language in the 1880s after 1,700 years of disuse.
