The oldest known form of Greek writing. Deciphered in 1952 by Michael Ventris, an architect. Used for administrative records in Mycenaean palaces. Has about 87 syllabic signs. Written on clay tablets that were preserved by fire. Mostly inventory and accounting records, no literature survives.
