About Meitei Mayek
The ancient script of Manipur in northeastern India. Replaced by Bengali letters for centuries, then revived during the 20th century. Its origins are debated, with claims of derivation from Brahmi or local invention. Now taught in Manipuri schools and seen on shop signs and newspapers. A rare example of a successfully revived regional script.
